Today we welcomed two new babies into the world!! Here's how it all happened:
Yesterday morning I went back in to the hospital for another scheduled NST/BPP. Since my hospital stay on Friday I had gained 10 pounds in fluid (YIKES!) and was now swollen all the way up my legs and even in my pelvic region. I was so uncomfortable!! Additionally, I was having some upper abdominal pain and my blood pressure was elevated. The decided to keep me all day to monitor me. My urine didn't have protein in it but because of all of the other potentially worrisome symptoms in addition to my cholestasis, my doctor ordered a 24 hour urine collection to check it again. That was at 1330, meaning I'd be there until at least 1330 the following day. By the evening, I was miserable so they gave me several doses of pain meds to help me relax.
I kept waking up needing to use the restroom but it would almost hurt and when I'd go, there would be very little coming out. I mentioned it to my nurse because of it being so bad so she suggested we put a catheter in to see if there was urine in my bladder that I was just unable to expel. As she was prepping me for that, she noted how swollen I was down there, including the pelvic area over my bladder and even my lady bits. I said that I wasn't surprised seeing as how uncomfortable I was feeling from there down. Anyway, when she put in the catheter, nothing came out. So that meant that they were pumping me with fluids and my body wasn't processing them out. With that, she went to call my doctor and update him and also advocate for me about how miserable I was.
When she came back in at 0345, she said that my doctor, Dr. Matta, ordered her to turn down my fluids, officially admit me, put the catheter back in and have me sign the cesarean paperwork. He would come in during his morning rounds and decide the game plan and time frame from there. I texted Grant and Russ to let them know what was going on.
Next thing I knew, everything was chaotic! The nurse came back in at 0430 and informed me that Dr. Matta would be in in about 15 minutes to do a cesarean on another patient who was currently in labor and that after he performed hers, he was gonna perform mine! I asked her how much time that meant before we headed in to the OR and she said about an hour!!!
I called Grant and Russ who were a good 30 minutes away and told them to book it and get here!
At 0551 the nurse came in the room and said they were ready to take me back to the OR. Grant and Russ still weren't there! And then, with perfect timing, Grant walked in the room. Whew! He got prepped and they wheeled me back.
(Side note: Although I had been hoping for a vaginal delivery all through this pregnancy and always said I'd insist on at least trying my inversion before heading back for a cesarean if Ava had turned, by Monday, I was so swollen and sore and uncomfortable down there that I didn't really even want to try pushing anything out through all of that and I was frankly just relieved they were coming out! So by the time I was heading back for surgery, I was happy.)
As soon as they broke through Ava's bag, there was a loud and huge gush of fluid heard and I IMMEDIATELY felt 100 pounds lighter and relief!!
Ava Louise was born at 0622 weighing 6 pounds 1 ounce, 19 inches and Barrett Joseph was born at 0624 weighing 6 pounds, 21 inches.
